leg today. Luckily it was idling, chain not spinning. Ever since one of my bicep tendons got shredded/snipped I have very little strength/endurance in my left arm. Was out working on a few trees I had taken down and my arm got fatigued....will be ordering some chaps prior to using the saw again.....Have not taken my jeans off yet, they got ripped some. Did not see any blood, does not hurt so.....

Hey Ink...I thought I was the only guy that crap happened to. But boy you are right up there with me!

Believe it or not I did the same thing when I was about 30. Wasn't real deep but gaping on top of my knee and I couldn't get it to stay together with tape. Had no hospitalization so...I had my wife sew it up with 4lb fishing line. She kept saying doesn't it hurt? I said heck yeah so get it done! Only 2 stitches...can hardly see it now.

yeah my friend fell over backwards with his 20inch stihl and it shredded his jeans...not a scratch on his skin. Unbelievable....

I wish my wife was strong enough to do that kind of sewing! It would have saved me a few trips if you know what I mean.

Thank God you weren't seriously hurt!

Chaps are a good idea, I managed a log yard for a lot of years and seen first hand what a chain saw can do to flesh. It isn't very pretty! Safety glasses too and hearing protection.

No damage other than my jeans. Will be ordering chaps here soon...always wear safety glasses...and hearing protection of some sort....even if it is just my ear buds...which seem to do a pretty decent job of muffling the noise from the saw....

at least you didn't drop it on your wiener .......I think that would have been more painful. jeans can be replaced and bruises heal. At least you didn't see blood and chain wasn't turning.

It was probably more shocking than anything else. I grazed my finger one time with a hedge trimmer ....dang lucky I didn't cut my finger off but I remember that I was more in shock than pain at first.

Buddy nicked his leg and 14 stitches to sew it up

You were lucky, might want to get the arm fixed too if you plan on cutting overhead with a chainsaw

Nothing can be done for my bicep. Had shoulder surgery, doc said I only had a couple fibers of the bicep tendon left, there was not enough to repair it so she just clipped it. My bicep is now resting just above my elbow. Prior to the surgery she was hopeful that there was enough left for her to reattach it but there was not.

With your luck I'd highly recommend a pair of Chain saw chaps. Better safe than sorry.

Glad you are ok. No blood is good blood in one of these cases! Chain saws can really make for a bad day even if you are sharping the dang things. One more safety item Steel Toed Boots. No you ride so you mite have a old pair.

Them darn saws don't know the difference between wood and flesh. And a chainsaw takes out a pretty wide kerf. I've seen plenty of mishaps growing up here in the northwest. Good thing you weren't working in the nude. Lol

Doug,
Yes as said, you got lucky! A chain saw would have done serious damage be thankful the chain wasn't spinning!!!!

Got a set of chaps from EBAY last night. Local retailer wanted $70 + tax, got last year's model for $40 delivered.
No more chain saw till they get here next week.

GOOD! Glad you took that advice.

I can't tell you how many legs they've saved!

I know I am new here but what you did sounds exactly why the manufacturers put that safety feature on chainsaws lol!!!

Don't mind my ignorance....some folks here say I am VERY ignorant....but which safety feature are you talking about? Did not know there was one to stop you from dropping the saw....

well yea, there is a sling for it ya put around ya neck!??? LOL
I used to have on heavy Carhart type coveralls when I was cutting. I would get tired, hold the saw sideways, ( why, don't know), it would idle a little too high with chain runnin some, would hit my coveralls and put nice cut in them. HOW it never went thru jeans to ME I don't know!??? maybe the man upstairs looks after his guys and kids!??????
so now I leave off coveralls( threw them away, too manny cuts and holes).... andnow I just pay attention!

Doug,
I got an uncle that could contest to what happened to you as being seriously "LUCKY"... He sometime in the early 1980's took a chain saw to the chest, went right through his shoulder blade, out the back, and right BESIDE his Jugular....1/2 inch away! He fell from the tree he was in, removed his gaffs and DROVE himself to the local hospital, 3/4 mile away! Needless to say his 1980 Ford F-250 needed a new seat as the blood loss factor in that seat to this day astounds me, he had but 2 pints left in his body from the gash the saw made.......

The chain saw was a McCulloch 4070.....With a folding 4 foot bar!

Needless to say, he lived, and they done all sorts of surgeries over it, he was 700 miles from home at that time, and was in the hospital for 8 months over it....They had to teach him how to walk again, and use both arms, done some serious bone graphs, and ****, I have no idea what all was done to get him to a somewhat normal bodily person from it, but I can tell you, he walked for many a year with his head tilted downward to one side, and his left arm was always sort of, messed up, not 100% useless, but he literally had no resistance strength in it (The saw removed most of the side movement muscle as it cut and removed it as it fell down over his chest while in that tree!)

Sadly tho to end this, he lived up till 2 weeks after my Dad passed in March, My uncle Ned passed from a lung cancer treatment complication....The actual Lung Cancer disease isn't what took him! All i can say is all my life he was a small guy but a tuff ole bastard he was......Today, may he rest in peace.....
