Dude, where's my tailgate?

Are they making these out of aluminum yet? I know some hoods and stuff are aluminum now.

$1,000 dollar tailgate? what is it gold plated :dontknow:

About 15 years ago I was a field engineer for Cutler-Hammer Westinghouse and we had F-150 work trucks with caps on the beds. While staying at a hotel in Louisville, Ky I had my truck broken into and all my equipment stolen. The tailgate had been removed, apparently it was easier for the thieves to bust my tailgate off than to break in through the cap.

Not aluminum, but they are expensive. Some OE shells are are $600-$700. Add the cost to prep and paint inside and out, then add all the hardware (not included when you buy a new one), and it's pretty easy to hit $1000.

BTW, I have been looking for a nice used tailgate for a 2004 Dodge and the salvage yards are telling me $600-$650, and plan on an hour's damage and some paint work.

We replaced a Ford F150 tailgate that had the built in step and liner after it was stolen. The gate , painted with all the hardware was over $2800.00. This gate had a lock but the owner forgot to lock her up. It cost him his $500 deductible and the insurance co. looked after the rest. So. keep them gates locked up. and for those with out the locks, mig weld a washer onto the cable ends where they snap into the strikers, they would have to cut the cables and would just go to the next truck.

We have been taking the tailgates off of all trucks on the lot. We've also been placing these obscenely huge wheel locks on the wheels.
We haven't had any issues, but one of the shops up the street got nailed to the tune of over $50K in damage.
