Dust covers - do I need them?

I've just installed a disc brake kit with 12 inch rotors and PBR 2 piston calipers (as an aside, PBR are an Aust. company and OEM suppliers to GM and Ford in US, I believe - Baer brakes also use their calipers). Anyway, as mounted, the rotors are about 1 inch further out from the hub than the stock rotors. You can see from the pic below that the dust covers would pretty much be useless in performing their function. Would do you think - do I really need them, or should I just go without the dust covers?

i took them off my car when i installed my drop spindles. i don't run them on my rock crawling jeep either,too hard too clean,and crap gets stuck behind them.

I did the disc. from drum swap and was checking my Hayes manual,It said you don,t need them cause they just collect stuff and rot.I didn,t replace mine!No biggie!

Them things do more bad than good. I would take them off.

I'm not running them on all 3 of my A bodies. I think they are more of a sheild to stop water from hitting the rotors. When it's real wet the first hit of the pedal does seem like the brakes are a little spongy, but then the grab like usual. The thing for me to remember is there seems to be a little delay when the brakes get real wet.
