I do not like the bumpy pot metal bezels on my '74 Duster. Even new ones look tacky. So I am thinking about flush mounting the lamps like on a '70-'72. I can do this buy welding studs so the lamps have something to fasten to from the inside of the rear body panel. Has anyone done this? Or should I just cut the panel out and weld in a '70-'71 style?

I've seen pictures of exactly what you are describing It looks great in my opinion. Way easier than swapping tail panels too. I bought my car with a new paint job or I would have done it too. I saved some photos of this mod but I can't find em right now. I will post if I find them.

Here's a picture for reference on how it would look. I thought there was a thread on this somewhere but I can't find it at the moment. You'd have to fill the holes in the tail panel where the mounting studs for the bezels go through, and then install studs on the backside of the panel to mount the tail light buckets.
