So I’ve had this apart for a rebuild and I can’t seem to understand what the previous rebuilder/owner did to this accumulator piston. I’m upgrading it to a sonnax dual seal but for some reason they left out the spring that goes between the accumulator and valve body, instead they put a tube in the bottom to hold it up. Anyone seen this before or know why or why not it should be done.

Thanks,

Jake

Blocking rod. It's a performance thing. If you're just street driving, you can go back to the spring
That was my first thought, but I couldn't find anything similar in any posts or for sale. Appreciate the quick reply.

How's the rebuild coming along? Had any issues trying to get set your clutch pack clearances? Im closing in on mine today, was hoping I could use that tube since I'm missing the spring, so it looks like it'll be a waiting game.
No reason you can't use the tube, if you want. Supposed to help with 1 - 2 shifts on performance setups.

Rebuild was a learning experience. Found out a lot about compatibility (or lack thereof) between the /6 904 and V8 internals. Bunch of changes on the output side. Spring press made the pack build much easier.

Tom Hands book and threads on here were helpful but on the early ones, you're kinda on your own.

Yeah, that's kind of where I was at. Did you have a /6 904 valve body you wanted to use with a V8?

No.. had the V8 VB.

I had a chummed up planetary, but the Overrunning clutch on the V8 has different tooth count so, that was a no-go on the carrier.

I only part number different between the 273 and the 170/ 225 is the Valve body Transfer plate ....

Have to go @lkopaska to understand why that is.

@WV64Signet
Only difference on plate is some hole sizes for shifting feel on V8 or /6.
Buth valve bodies will interchange provided you have the right year applications for shifter type and pump configuration
