Hi,
Anybody here use the Eastwood buffing motor/ buffing kits? or reccomend an alternative?

I'm thinking of ordering the 3/4 HP motor with 10" buffing kit to try and restore some trim... I think you could use a regular grinder, and just switch out attachments, but between myself, father in law, and brother in law we have over 6 vehicles that will need trim restored, so I was thinking of just getting a dedicated one so we don't have to worry about contamination.

If what they're selling is a Baldor polisher I'd surely recommend it, I've had mine for eight years and use it every day(almost) since all I do is trim.

Let me know if ya need any tips on straightening, sounds like you'll have plenty ahead of ya.

Thanks rpmongoose... what size motor do you use? yes I would appreciate some tips,
they do sell baldor motors, but the one I was looking at is their own brand motor, and a lot cheaper...

The 3/4hp Eastwood motor with 10" buff kit is $350
The 3/4hp Baldor motor alone is $570

I know you get what you pay for, maybe i'll check craigslist for a baldor...

I have a 3/4 horse. but the one horse is two speed and could come in very handy and may look into it.

It's just a thought but if I want to step up to the bigger one I maybe could sell you the one i have.

If I sell you mine I'll need to look at arbor sizes of the larger one and if that's different(think it is) I have a ton of polishing wheels for the 3/4 arbor and don't really want to order three or four hundred dollars more in new wheels.

I'll check on the possibilities.

I've got a 1 1/2 hp Baldor from Eastwood. It uses the 10" wheels, runs at 3600 rpm and is one of my favorite tools. :-D

If you aren't in a hurry or get the one from rpmongoose, they DO go on sale pretty often, and you'll be able to snatch up the motor, a kit of starter accessories (a few wheels, different compounds, rake, face mask, etc.), and a stand for a decent price.

Whatever you do, be careful with that thing if you aren't used to one! Though it hasn't happened to me {knockin on wood lol}, I've seen it rip parts out of Billy's hands when he lets it catch an edge and it WILL hurt you. There's still a piece of scrap stainless embedded in my shop ceiling insulation from one of his first practice attempts.

Is yours two speed? Does it run on 220? What size arbor does it have?

I did a brief google search and I think I'll stick with mine based on the prices.

And oh yeh.........the ole "sling the trim around the shop trick" gotta watch out for that.

The Eastwood brand motors are dual speed... 1750/3450rpm
when would you use the low speed on certain materials?

Have you run into situations where you wished you had more than a 3/4 hp motor? I'm not going to be doing this for money, just for our cars we are restoring, so I'm leaning towards the cheaper Eastwood motor rather than the Baldor motors...
I thought I saw a code in the newest carcraft for 20% off at Eastwood, but it might have been certain items, so I need to find that magazine.

Thanks for the input so far

3/4 horse has always been plenty enough snort for me and as you know that's all I do so you won't need more than that.

The times I would have preferred a slower speed was when doing very complicated corners and dangerous and/or delicate pieces.

Mine is a single speed with the 7/8" arbor. When I was shopping, a friend who restores trim for a living suggested having more than one speed did more harm than good, in that it would be tough to get consistent results switching speeds. I can see how a slower speed would be handy for delicate parts and angles though.

Here's mine. http://www.eastwood.com/buff-motor-1-1-2-hp.html

I was reading more on eastwoods site, they say the higher speed is for metal, and the slower speed is for polishing plastic...

I tried the 20% off code out of the magazine and it did nothing to the price, so it must be only good on certain items... I also have a free shipping code, but guessing that won't work either do to it being extra heavy.
