I purchased a pair of edelbrock performer heads for my 440
It came with two hold down bolts for the rocker shafts
Do they have to be used instead of the original bolts?
The bolts have an upward extended and threaded section
They look too tall for the valve covers. Edelbrock put me on hold for an hour and still couldn’t answer my question

I have them on mine. I used the studs. They’re necked down because the engine oil flows through those areas for the rocker lubrication. Now what I can’t answer is why the factory bolts won’t work but I’m guessing it has to do with the casting of the head.

You can use the stock bolts.
The reason for the studs is……. The 1,3,7 hold down positions have helicoils, and 2,4 positions do not.
To keep from stressing the threads, they supply studs for those positions.
But you don’t “have to” use them.

Thank you for this info
I actually called edelbrock and they didn’t even know
Not shocked there.... their tech support has been spotty since COVID... but thats kinda how most places have been. If you get a hold of a good person write that name down and ask for them by name. Did that with my Pro-Flo install.

My engine builder likes to use studs with alum heads. Much easier on the threads when taking things on/off.
