I was wondering if I could get some problem solving / electrical advice

Yesterday I took my car around the block, got on it, and when the motor got between 3500-4000 rpm it started missing and sputtering and then a puff of smoke came billowing out from under the dash. I pulled over shut the car off, cleared the smoke and started the car. I thought for sure I cooked the wiring

I noticed that the amp gauge was pegging the charging side when I reved it up, so I slowly drove it home and dissconected the battery.

any thoughts or simular situations, maybe simple regulator

If you let the smoke out of the wires enuff to have to clear the cockpit then it should be fairly easy to find the burnt wiring under the dash. But as Tony says it probably started with the regulator
