Were 4 speeds more matched up w the V8 than the six?

Were different 4 speed trans used off and on thru production ?

Did the shifter always look the same? Is there a pix of what a normal one looks like for 1964?

thanks

I think 4 speeds were rare to begin with, either engine. On 64 -65 A bodies they were the same, /6 or 273. There were differences from 64 -74. 64 and 65 used the trunion joint at the rear. 66 and 67 used the small spline, 26, output mainshaft and lost the low, 3.09 1st gear for the 2.66 first gear. 68-70 used the larger 30 spline mainshaft. Late 70 -74 1st gear went to 2.47 first gear and interlocking shift forks. Some early 70's transmissions used the 3.09 1st gear. All A body transmissions use the small, 307 front bearing and small 4.354 OD front bearing retainer. The shifters are all in the same position and, except for the 64 and 65 trunion rear joints, have the same length, and can use the same shifters and linkage.
