Get To Go Archery Elk Hunting In Centeral Montana Early September
This Will Be My First Time For Elk, Anyone Been There Or Live There That Could Tell Me What To Expect

I've been out to Billings a couple times to work on the airfield, expect to see some beautiful country if never been before. Being a swampbilly from FL it was a nice change.
Beartooth pass and Yellowstone are a must do.
The most critters I've ever seen in one place through out Montana.
You will have a great time.
By the way, no sales tax there, nice place for large purchases.

I hope you kill a monster. I have only hunted elk once. I drew a tag in Tenn the only year the offered one. I shot a decent 5x5.

I live in Wyoming 45 miles from the Mt. border. But Elk hunting is fun, with a bow its alot like turkey hunting. I've Put 8 BOW KILL BULLS in the freezer,And 2 cows. Any elk with a bow will be a challenge and a trophy. I've put down quite a few with a rifle and the bow hunts are always parimont.
Just keep your cool when that bull comes storming in thrashing trees with his horns and screaming like they do.. I've been with more than one guy that froze behind the bow..... Remember they aren't always like the TV shows.... Enjoy the sceanery and the times your heart is pounding out of your chest..Just take a breath and remember ,don't look at the horns, find the spot behind the front shoulder and release. ->-> ->
Then take pictures to show all your buddies here at FABO......

Ditto here (from Florida) - awesome country, can't describe big Western scenery, you just gotta go. Hunted east of Billings for Antelope, took home a 15 1/2" trophy with nice ivory tips. Been for elk in Colorado, believe it or not, big difference - much more game, more country and far fewer people in Montana, next to Alaska it's got to be the "wildest" state in the union. Unfortunately with the advent of cable TV and the internet, it's no secret, actually a good thing it's an expensive trip for most, probably helps keep the pressure down.

Come a bit farther north,,,okotoks alberta,,antelope45 min. to the east,,elk moose15 min west and mule deer and whitetail everywhere :)

Can't speak for Montana, just the foothills of the Rockies in Colorado........so many muley's and elk at times it was hard to pick a target.......unbelievable.

Hiked onto a partially dried lake bed (and the clay was about 4"thick on my boots) and did some trout fishing too........no bait, just little gold trout hooks.......they snatched them as soon as they hit the water........

I would guess that in Montana you'll have similar experiences hunting elk......and if you bag the right one, there's no better steak in my book......but it's a LOT of work packing out the kill........be careful, and have a great experience.....it should be one of the best of your life. :toothy10:

Keep your mouth shut about being from California and you'll probably enjoy your visit more.

Cenral Montana is flat and boring as far as I'm concerned, but packing out a kill might be easier than if you were in the mountains.

Archery hunting Elk is very challenging. Been doing it 15 years an only taken 3 animals an one was a cow. Enjoy your trip an the experience. I would keep the california part quiet to
