i'm getting my engine compartment painted tomorrow on my 72 dart, I was wondering if the compartment is suppose to have a clear coat on it or just a bast coat alone?

You would never use base coat alone, it doesn't have much (if any) actual protective properties. It might even be worse than regular primer in that regard. Also, the base coats I've used and seen have no gloss to them.

So, you will use BC-CC even in the engine bay.

thanks a lot, i just assumed to use a clear but started thinking about the heat and began to wonder.

as stated already, basecoat alone wouldnt last at all. clearcoat will seal the basecoat , give it gloss and make it durable.

Well it would depend on how the paint is formulated (single stage or two stage). I just got more paint mixed to paint my trunk and the engine compartment. It is single stage so it dries glossy.

A clear is always good but just make sure it sticks to the paint under it.

Must have a clear coat to get everything to pop.
