What's up guys ? I have a 340 I just pulled out of my dart today, the numbers on the driver's side are 2780930-340-4 which from what I've found say its a 340 from 68-73 . On the passenger side I have 5-28-80 how is that even possible? That would mean it was cast in May of 1980. It has X heads on it also.If anyone can clear this up for me that would be great! Thanks .

It is "B" in the link krazykuda put up here that is what is confusing me. Cause it s impossible to have a 340 from that year. Is it possibly a 355 X block?

The date looks like 69 to me. Remember that these are cast numbers and are often rough. Clean it well with a wire brush and have a closer look. Is there a VIN stamped on the VIN pad? 69 cast would be a 70 model year should have a VIN on it.

The VIN pad is under the drain plug in your second photo.

The engine has its own serial number as well, look on the front of the block below the drivers side head surface.

Get photos of both numbers if you can, they will help a lot.

The partial vin is, stamped not cast, on the right oil pan rail about midway on a machined pad about 2-3" by 1/2".
The engine assembly info is, stamped not cast, on the left, front of the block just under the head mounting on a machined pad

5-29-69 it appears which seems likely used in an late 69 or early 70 vehicle. If the VIN starts with 9 or 0 will determine that.

E = 1969 model year built at the W = Windsor plant, "s o" is actually "340" and 2889 is the assembly date - June 25, 1969, 0133 is number of engine assembled that day up to yours.

vin 9 = 1969, B Hamtramck car plant 424241 is last 6 of vin.

it would have been a forged crank from the factory. Also I missed -The P on the assembly info stands for premium fuel.

The only 1969 model year cars built at Hamtramck (or anywhere else) with 340s were Darts & Barracudas, so that narrows it down some.

You have a 69 model year engine. As long as it still has all of the original internals it will have "the good stuff"...
