I've got a 1966 Dodge Dart with a 273 v8 and a 2bb carter carb. Just got it last saturday from a guy. Says he rebuilt the carb. I start the car and the second I let off the gas it dies. Checked timing, vaccum hoses, fuel pump, fuel filter, and still can't get it to stay running. I readjusted the idle and air to fuel ratio at the carb, but nothing seems to work. I got the car to stay running by barely changing the timing, but the idle was then too high. Readjusted the idle and the car won't stay running. Thinking I may just need a new carburetor, but not sure! HELP!!

Grab hold of the throttle shaft and see if you can wiggle it back and forth or up and down any at all. If you can, you will need a new throttle shaft and a bushing kit. The throttle shaft bore in the carb body wears out after only 30 or 35 years and will suck air around the shaft causing the problem you are describing. Remove the old throttle shaft, drill out the bore in the carb body, install bushings and a new shaft, and you're good for another 30 years or so.

Thanks for everyone's help. Got it to stay running finally, but now it dies when I put it in gear. #-oNow what?

you need to turn the mixture screws out about 4-5 turns each then start it up and see if it idles, if it does, get a friend to put it in gear and hold the brake while you adjust in or out to obtain the highest & smoothest rpm.

I like to have it in reverse so that I don't get run over by the 'helper'.

ok timings good runs great drives for about 10 minutes, idles down and dies but starts right back up you guys are great please continue to help me get this car back on the road where it belongs THANKS FOR EVERYTHING
