I used to do that downshift-then-key-off-for-5-seconds explosions.....but the best part was I had these huge diameter chrome VOOM pipes that exited in front of the rear wheels, and I could throw about a 4-foot flame out the side of the car. The fun part was doing it while you were passing a kid on a bicycle. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I was a bad kid....
I think your muffler was corroded and perforated to the point of letting a lot of air in to mix with that unburnt fuel, which probably was a perfect combustion chamber!!
