Fan Clutch Testing

Does anyone know how to tell whether a fan clutch is bad or not? BEFORE you put it on the car and it overheats?

i'd guess if you stick a heat sorce twords the front of it, it should lock. or get very tight to slip. and also the reverse, it should loosen up as it cools off.
