Well after a few months I finally got the 360 running. The magnum indy 360-M intake kicked my *** for all most a month. I sent it off to get it redrilled for the LA bolt pattern. Then had to get 0.90 shaved off the sides and 0.120 off the end rails. Ok I must be a Dumbass or something or my year 1990 crafstman timing light must be junk. I ask because if I set the timing to 36 degrees with my timing light. The truck is hard to start and doesn't sound that good at a idle. Now if I set the timing by ear. The truck fires right up and sounds more crisp and idles better. But if I check it with my timing light its showing I am at 50/52 degrees. I do have the timing locked out. But I dont think 52 can be right, because the engine doesn't kick back at all cracking it over.

Looks like an msd distributor? Are you using an msd box? Is your timing light a "dial back" light?

Pretty sure a dial back doesn't work right with an msd. Get the dumbest, cheapest (but not Chinese, preferably) timing light you can and double check. Or borrow another light from a buddy.

Hi yes it's a MSD Dist. This is the ingtion box o am useing.

I used to use my timing light on my older race cars with no problems. I used it on a Accell 300+ and a crane HI-6R box with no trouble. But that was long ago. So I am going to do like you guys are saying and try a diffrent light.

You don't know where your timing is until you verify TDC.

This^^^^^^is the first step you need to take. You need to verify TDC so you know exactly what the timing really is.

Haven’t had a Pertronix box on my distributor machine yet, but I’d bet it has retard with RPM.

Ok I will have to buy the stuff to check the TDC. Well i didn't know much about the pertronix box at the time. But for $200 I figured I would give it a try
But it got all kind of diffrent setting to pick from
Also if it does retard with RPM how would you correct it?

Here is a Sema video of the same box that you can change the settings with your phone.

It’s not just the Pertronix box that retards with RPM. They all do it. How much and when it happens has to be tested.

That intake was that far off, was the deck milled on the engine.
You have me worried now, I just bought the same intake, for a future build.

14-16* of what???? I got a bit lost here.
He said he set it to 52 and feels like 36..
I just don't think the ignition box would retard that much maybe a few degrees or something but not that much. I think something is off like the harmonic balancer...

Oh...got it. I don’t think that either. That’s why I asked if he verified TDC. Most boxes retard 4-6 degrees and start a little above max advance and then changes with RPM.

I finally got a video of the truck running. Dont mind the smoke, it's coming off the headers.

I am not sure, but that's what I was thking too. I bought the engine off my friend.. I never had a problem with the intake when I had EQ heads on it.

Not that it matters but the engine was built and raced for two years before I bought it. All I did was install the trickflow heads. Well i did install a new PRW harmonic Dampner. But i hope it wouldn't be that far off. But you never know.

I hope this works. Lol ok here is a video I took right after I got it running. Dont mind the smoke, its coming off the headers.

Sorry for the confusion. But what I was trying to say is when I set the engine to 36 degrees with my timing light, the engine ran but not that great to me. When I set the timing to ear, checking it with my timing light it shows I was around 50/52 degrees ..

I understood that but I wasn't good at repeating it LOL I was trying to convey to yellow rose that I don't think your timing box retarded the timing that much.. maybe a couple few degrees but not that much...
My son is Power Wagon was the same way.. I put a 360 out of a 75 in his 76 and for whatever reason the timing just didn't jive well with the timing gun but when I said it by feel and it ran way better it was like 52 or something like that when I rechecked it with the timing light..
I'm not sure if the balancer was off or what the deal was or the timing gear or what but it was what it was and it is what it is...
