Almost always a pain to replace in car I try to use brass whenever available. For those times when all I have is steel I always try to clean them and paint them (all surfaces) before installation to help shield against corrosion and when installing I use some fresh paint on the block and cup to be the sealant as well. Anyone else been doing this?

I've done this once with know problems.
Early on I would use silicone which worked fine except one time a friend was helping and he had one cocked crooked and upon hard acceleration it blew out the back of the motor along with all of my coolant, I was pissed and I don't have people 'help' me with things like that anymore.
A lot of people are not going to agree with the rtv but thats all right.

Your not alone. i have done all of the above trying to make it so that i dont have to change any out until the motor needs a rebuild anyway. And did you notice it always seems to be the one that goes out is a PITA to get to!?
