Fuel cell up grade

Is it possible or even feasable to install a gauge sending unit into a fuel cell that has foam and never had a sending unit? Or should I just buy another cell with the unit installed?
The cost difference between buying a new cell vrs buying a sending unit is about $80, in your opinions is it worth the effort to save $80?

I had a fuel cell once that had no sending unit installed. I cut an area in the foam for the unit, but that's before the cell was installed. If it were me, I'd pop for a new cell.

from what ive been told,pump gas wil make the foam break down,,,my cell has no foam,,and the sending unit went bad,,,,
