So my gauge reads 1/4 when I run out of gas. Someone just told me he thought it was the fuel pump, that the gauge was probably right but the pump could not work once the fuel got low, and that it would get worse. It does take a while to start every time if it has sat more than a couple of hours. Even if it is hot out. Does this make sense? How do I check?

You could pressure test the pump but the easiest way is to carry a gallon with you and when it quits (at 1/4 tank) dump in the gallon and go to the nearest gas station and fill it up. Compare the amount it takes to the advertised capacity of the tank. If it a 20 gallon tank and it only takes 15 gallons to top it off then you still had 5 gallons in the tank and the pump isn't drawing it.

Looks like I have an 18 gallon tank. I will try this out. Just means I get to run out of gas again. It looks like I can get a pump for less than the tank of gas. How hard is it to change? Where is it on the car?
