Hello FABO!
1965 Barracuda 273/904 auto. I’m looking for some feedback regarding the fuel tank vent tube assembly. Im currently refreshing the fuel system with a new tank, grommet, filler tube, sending unit and fuel line.

I was making the effort in cleaning and salvaging the vent tube assembly as shown in the FSM, but after soaking it and trying what I can with my resources I’m afraid it’s just not worth the risk in using it, it appears to have a pretty good plug of rust and corrosion blocking it. With pressurized air, it does “vent” but very weakly and restricted.

I’m of the mind to mock one up with some stainless and make a clone with the same bends. I’m probably overthinking this but you guys are the experts and I want ask so I don’t do anything foolish that I might be overlooking…

If I were to bend and make up a clone of the vent tubing… how critical is the “spherical” tip on the one end of the tube? This is the end that goes into the short section of rubber hose and to the filler tube with a small hole in the center of the spherical tip…

I’ve circled the tip with a red circle… I can bend one up fairly close to exact as the original but am curious is absolutely necessary to have that same exact style tip? I’m not sure of the correct type of ending or how critical it might be…

I don’t know what I don’t know and figured it was safe to ask anyone who might have some experience with this particular thought. Thanks for any and all help!

I used to make those ends, not as close, but useable, by simply using a "partial" cycle with a double flare adapter and flaring tool. Those are the ones used to be the little disc with a pilot in the kit that you inserted into the end of the tube to make a double flare. Personally I would not get too excited about stainless. I can be very difficult for tight bends, it work hardens, and ask yourself, "how long" was it again, did the original last?
 

UPDATE: against my better instincts… I tried a little bit more “oomph” with some more PSI from ye ole air compressor, after a little further soaking with evaporust, I believe it finally dislodged the “rust plug” that was in the line because something shot clear across the shop and nailed the garage door with enough force that it sounded like a AA battery projected out of an air cannon (just a guess, not that I’d recognize that oddly specific sound, thankfully I had my safety glasses on and the kids were nowhere around, yikes!)

Regardless. The line is now CLEAR and venting without any restriction at all… having said all of that, maybe with a little more bath time in the evaporust and some more air… would anyone here be apposed to going ahead and using the original vent tube now that it’s cleaning up and clear? It should only be capturing and directing fumes or vapors in pressurizing at any time correct? So there’s little to no risk of anything coming up and out of the vent line and into the fill tube???

Any thoughts?
 
Be sure it will hold pressure for a day or do something to be sure it does not have pinholes from the rust. If it does it will leak vapors into the cars trunk / cabin
