What engines had such a huge taper at the top of the cylinder bore?

Dunno. But that one has been bored .030 over so the large lead in could have been added at that time. Maybe it eliminates a ring compressor. Just set the piston in the hole and whack it with the dead blow hammer. Really speeds up the rebuild process.

Have witnessed that for real and the piston and bolt don’t look near as pretty as that
 
Good catch!
Maybe a Soviet design to reduce tooling requirements at the factory. I could see them doing that. Their jet engines were made robust enough to handle all kinds of FOD, unlike french planes...

I was working with a small crew about 4 of us, I guess they were all mid 30`s. None of them ever heard of the concord or sst`s :realcrazy:
I witnessed one take off when on a jobsite from Dulles, my God those things were LOUD!

It's a Supertech High Performance piston. Pretty sure that's a 454 big block Chevy based on the p/n . I know they sometimes put a large chamfer on the bores adjacent to the intake valves. Maybe they needed the clearance, and took the easy way out. Lowered compression while they were at it. Who knows?
