Gas tank drain

Depends on how bad it is. The tank may be rusting from the inside out. You may have to buy a new one, especially if it is the original.
 
How old is definitely a factor. Could be a horrible smelling waste of time.
 
I'd drop the tank so you can see inside the fill hole to see what the inside looks like, then go from there
