When Chrysler rolled out over a million A bodies, what colour were the two gas tank straps? Black or grey/galvanised colour? I can’t imagine they changed from 68 to 76 but it’s for a 75 Scamp.

I have seen both, but can't give you a correlation to model years of either. I think it may have been dependent upon who the then-current supplier was to any particular assembly plant...

I find....

If all the metal is rusty it was raw metal

If some of the metal is rusty but there are remnants of paint it was painted

If some of the metal is rusty but there are reminders of galvanize it was galvanized.

This is about 95% correct

Galvanized, like the tank. If the car was undercoated, they just sprayed undercoating all over it. I don’t know that they ever painted the strap or tank black, though lots of home restorers seem to.

Yeah my Scamp had the undercoating but it sure wasn’t consistently applied across the the gas tank. There’s a little bit on the passengers side edge of the gas tank and that’s about it. The factory got the rest of the underside of the car but stopped short for the tank…. Not a surprise since my car was built on a Friday.
