I'm to the point where I need to start sealing things up. Bought this complete gasket kit but don't recognize some items and a couple questions on some too...
The kit

Thank in advance!

Q1 looks like oil filer adapter gaskets?
Q2 NFI (no fn idea)
Q3 Ears are to be trimmed (do a search tons of threads on here)
Q4 and Q5 ee Q2
Q6 is preference..dont use steel if using alum intake and steel heads (dissimilar metals)

Let's see.

Q1 is the gasket that you use if you have the right angle oil filter adapter. Should be a small round gasket that seals the big bolt that holds it to the block. Make sure you use it if you have the adapter, or dirty oil will get by the filter. I'm talking about the one with the three legs.

The big round one with nothing in the middle is the one you use if you use the straight adapter.

Q2 I never use them. IIRC they are for holding the tin intake gaskets in place.

Q3 The ears on the rear main seal go into the main cap. The other half goes in the block. You have to seal the cap to the pan rail. Without the ears, it will leak. Also have seen where the ears are separate. That was a long time ago.

Q4 is hard to tell the size from the pics but looks like the oring is for the distributor. The rest I can't tell.

Q5 is Tstat gaskets for more than one application. The other stuff looks like emissions stuff and you probably won't use it.

Q6 if you are using cast iron heads and intake, I'd use the tin gasket. Spray it both sides with copper coat or high temp silver paint. Let it tack up and go. If you have an aluminum intake, use the blue ones. Unless, they are too thick. Then you can use the tin ones. Or, you can machine the intake manifold so it firsts correctly and use th blue ones.

Awesome! Thanks guys!
So the tin intake gaskets huh? Don't seem like they'd seal as well but I'll take your advice.

Jeff

Jeff, I use the blue fel pro intake gaskets, a little more forgiving for parts being matched up. Never had a leak. I use the red round plastic things also, they hold the gasket in place to be sure they don't move when you set the intake on. Your heads are notched in two bolt holes per side for the plastic rounds to sit in. I use RTV around the water jackets and intake ends. I use shellac (indian head gasket maker) on the ports.

So that's what those red round plastic things are!
This is the same kit you used!
Thanks!

Also, if you look, the blue gaskets have larger port holes. They match the intake. And yes, two of the intake bolt holes on the head have a counter bore to place the plastic rounds (holders).

Now I gotta go check that out....I never really noticed that!

so, this is how it will go: RTV around water jackets on the heads (4 of them). Next, small amount of shellac around the intake ports on heads (gas will eat RTV, don't use it here!). Next, place gaskets on the heads and use the holders (plastic rounds) to hold the gasket in place. Next, use the same sealants on the gasket like you did the heads. Cork ends are optional. If using them, use RTV on both sides of the corks, and thick in the corners. IF your not using the cork ends, Apply a very thick bead across where the corks would have been used. I personally use them if I'm using a cast intake. I don't if I'm using aluminum intake.

Got it.....heads will be going back on next weekend!

What make of kit? I would use blue intake as well but thats my opinion. When I did heads and LD4B on my 273, instructions from Felpro stated use small bead of RTV around ports. Never heard of using shellac.
Just my opinion

It's just a Summit kit....generic

Jeff

It's s summit kit, but Fel Pro is the brand. Fel Pro is a great brand

1- gasket on left is 1 of the 3 gaskets for the 90* filter mount, gasket on right is for the straight on oil filter plate. 3- ears are needed-look at main cap-with slight trimming. 4 - black O ring may be for distrib, round cork is 90* filter mount to block center, white round nylon is drain plug. 5- large black round is distrib. to block, small black round is under bolt head of 90* filter mount bolt

Q4- The round cork gasket and the white washer are for the mounting bolt on a right angle filter adapter.
