I removed the gearshift control cable according to the instructions, however I think I damaged the spring clip. (The cable will no longer remain entrained in the cable adapter) Has anyone else run into this, and any ideas on how to fix it?

You need to drop the pan, there should be a part that hooks to the shift lever. There's a clip on it that hooks into the groove at the end of the shaft in your photo. That's an early vintage shift cable just like on my 65 Cuda. 65'

yes - best and fastest way...also to adjust your cable… is to remove the pan. Adjustment is also a lot easier without the pan, as you can see the rooster comb and how it interacts with the neutral switch
