One of my co-workers got that nasty stuff. An odd thing helped him, odd to me anyway. He would hang by his knees upside down from a tree branch in his front yard for 15 minutes 2 or 3 times/day. He said it helped a great deal.

Diet is a big deal. They call it "rich man's desiese" cause rich men can afford big fatty steaks.

I have a good friend who made some of the finest home brew beer you have ever tasted. He had to quit after getting gout. He couldn't drink beer anymore. Pretty sad.

I tried to treat my gout with diet and but it was a lost cause. Tart cherry juice helped some, and I cut back on alcohol and red meat and so on, but in the end I had to get on a prescription. My life was pretty miserable from having outbreaks every 2-3 months or more. If I got one in my wrist, I wouldn't be able to tie my shoes or do a button for a week with that hand. Good sleep was a pipe dream. Turns out that I have both Gout and Pseudo-Gout. Got a prescription for 300mg of Alopurinol and life has been great since. I have to take meds for blood pressure anyway, so one more is no big deal and it made a colossal change for the better in my quality of life. I still try to eat well and we rarely have any processed foods in the house, I make everything from scratch. With my son going away to college it should be easier to eat more vegetarian meals than in the past, which should help everything.

I'm like you.
I take that pill for gout, and also take blood pressure medication, as i have a cow valve replacement on my heart.
Take lots of pills in the morning, and evening.
What ya gonna do, in old age?
I'm 72.

Thank-you all for replies and insight! I thought it was "toes only" that were affected. Guess it makes sense any joint could be affected. So far the tart cherry/celery seed supplement works here when it "bites".

I would get attacks in my ankles, knees, wrists and elbows. Never had one in the toes like seems so common. In my forties I thought I was going to have to get early knee replacement because I had so much pain. I’m 58 now and haven’t had any attacks in 5-6 years and no knee pain. I can be as active as I want other than dealing with being overweight and out of shape.

I asked my doc what to take for it when I was hurting like crazy once in my toe. He said the time to take medicine for it is when you're NOT hurting. He explained that when you hurt, your uric acid levels are at their lowest. Last time I got it in my knee cap, I rubbed some kind of joint cream (Voltarin) sp?, my wife has on it and it went away much quicker.

I would use one of the topically applied arthritis creams to get a little relief during a flare up. Once the doc figured out that it was Gout, he gave me a prescription for Colchicine. As I tried to adjust diet/lifestyle to prevent them, I would take that when the flare occurred and it was very effective. A typical one to two three week flare cycle would be reduced to two days. Apparently Colchicine used to be dirt cheap until they figured out how effective it was for Gout and my first prescription was about $6 per pill. The price has come down significantly since then for some reason, which doesn't hurt my feelings as I now have to take it daily for to help with some coronary issues.
