well i searched online and found that someone had used some scrap steel to make a very simple tool to get the torsion bars off.

basically it is just a l-shaped bracket with 4 holes drilled. take 2 exhaust clamps and put them over the t-bar. put the plate under the t-bar and tighten down. now you can whack the piece of metal hanging down (the "L" in the l-shape) and voila, out pops the t-bar.

in theory, that is. so i made up my little t-bat banger. popped it on the pass side and with baout 4 hits, the t-bar was out. SUPER EXCITED NOW. start thinking how i am proud i made a tool (simple as it may be) to help me get something done from scraps i had at the garage. this is my first car disassembly so any little thing i do right makes me happy. so i am all excited to get the drivers side done and then i can undo the 4 bolts holding the k-frame. whoo-hoo right.

uhm nope. damn t-bar wont budge. so i need to add some more strength and surface are to the l-tool thing i made and try again tonight. want to get this done soon as i think Joe from here is going to take the shell for his Shriners charity build.

just thought i'd share a newb's story.

A few tips. Did you pull the clip from the bacl of the torsion bar, in the hole that the bar slide out from ?

Also you need to back of the tension from the adjuster (3/4" bolt in the lower control arm) and loosen the lower control arm nut as well.

If you have a air hammer I usually give stuck bars a few quick raps with the dull rounded tip to loosen then.

thanks Adam - yep i removed the circlips and actually removed the bolts altogether. i'll try again after work today as it was 8:30 last night and getting dark - plus i dont think the neighbors were loving the metal on metal whacking!

Some people use the bracket that holds bike handle bars on and clap that to the T bar and hit that.

got em out! engine is out too! by the way using a handlebar riser clamp is a great idea -i have about 10 of em lying around and never thought of that. but i had fun using my welder anyway.

I used a wire rope clip (sometimes called a cable clamp) on mine. Got them out without scratches. Another thing I did was using a bottle jack to push on the clip. Pops it right out.
