Groan From Steering Column

There is a groan coming from the steering column when i turn the wheel. I have sprayed the column, the part under the hood with wd-40 and it goes away. There still seems to be some friction inside the column that seems to come from the area where the column shift is.

Any ideas on how to remedy this?

Column or under the hood? If your car has power steering, then fluid may be low. Sounds simple but this is the first place to start.
