Nope not a mole...

I have my 8.75 out of my '69 dart and in the garage for resto while the body is on the rotisserire. Will stripping the paint off the housing I found it had at one time been bright yellow and once that paint came off I found something that made me think. Painted there on the center housing was the shield of the Americal Division...an Army division that served in Vietnam. I had sanded through part of it and the stripper took the rest off before I could save it but it was there and it looked like there was a unit name painted above and below it but that was too far gone to read.

My car was a Y14 sold car built Sept '68...did a returning soldier order this car and with great pride paint his unit patch there to show the world he was proud of serving or in memoriam for his lost buddies. It makes you think what went through his mind.

I do not know who the original owner was and probably will never know but being a soldier myself and proud of fellow soldiers past and present and the sacrifices made. I have decided the Americal Patch painting will go back on the rearend as a respected momento to this cars past. Maybe someone will see it and recognize it and be able to fill me in someday of its owner.

23rd INFANTRY DIVISION "Americal Division"
"Many men have served "Under the Southern Cross" with pride, courage and professionalism, defeating the enemy in each encounter from New Caledonia to Vietnam. We can take pride in the accomplishments of the past as well as those which today are spelling defeat for the enemy in Vietnam. Much has been asked of the Americal soldier, and in meeting these tasks, he has never failed an opportunity to do more. Rugged field operations, numerous Vietnamese training projects, quiet medical and agricultural programs all carried forth with personal and unit professionalism have made the Americal Division into the Army's finest force. Thats interesting. Why don't you do a history search on the car and maybe you can find out the owner that put it there. Most likely the original owner. Mike

I had asked the local IL dmv about doing a title history search but was told they don't do that anymore. I know the last two owners back to around 1984 but it deadends there. The oldest owner that I know of bought it up here in the local area but doesn't remember anything else. Maybe since its a somewhat local car as far as I know some history may present itself once its back out on the road and seen. Len

Very cool story. I like your idea to put it back on there after, very cool.

Great story.....makes me proud you are going to put it back on.

Thank you and all of the others for serving in the Military.

:salute: A great mopar story for sure!! :salute:

Your DMV will not help, but just possibly the State Police will. When I bought my 70 Charger from a guy in Md. After doing some work on the paper trail I wanted to try and locate the original owner. I sent the vin# and other information to the State Police headquarters with a letter of explanation. In a few days I received a letter from the state commander giving me a name of a patrolman that was given the task of tracing the car's ownership. Bottom line he gave me a name, but telling me the guy was deceased. They however will not give your any addresses or phone numbers (but there are other ways). I did not attempt to locate the family under the circumstances. BTW, they also told me from which dealership the car was ordered / purchased. As it turns out the car never was more than 50 mile away from the dealership until I loaded it on a trailer and brought it back to Ohio. When I speak of the 50 mile distance I'm of course refering to ownership addresses. The officer who helped me was most interested and ask if I could send him a few pics of the car after it was restored, which of course I was more than happy to do. He also laughed one time when we talked on the phone, he said the guys who owned that car had "given" the state of Md. a fair amount of money in speeding tickets..............I waonder why ? LOL Good luck.

As I was taking apart the dash in my 67 notchback parts car, I found the original owner's SS card and his draft card from 1968. Thought that was kinda neat.

The info they will give you varies from state to state. In Washington they will give you the name and addresses of previous owners if the owners of the vehicle were businesses. If the previous owners were private owners then they won't give the info.

I did some research last night on Military.com and VAJOE.com, both of which are a wealth of info. You may be able to check out a couple of the forums and help track someone down in your area that served during that time frame.
