I just put on an old steering wheel on the valiant and was wondering if anyone has restained one before? I was thinking of a real dark stain to match the interior better. should you put something over the stain or would that make it too slippery?

I don't believe that's a Mopar wheel, it's an aftermarket piece. I think all the Mopar wheels are plastic instead of wood like yours.

I've redone a couple of plastic wheels but never a wood one. I have however redone wood furniture a lot, does that count? I'd give it a light sanding with 220 paper maybe first to get the existing finish off. You want the stain to penetrate into the wood. Get some stain from Home Depot or wherever. Minwax brand or Circa 1850, etc. After your done staining it a coating of sprayed on laquer would be good. You need something that will not soften in the heat or sunshine which is the main problem with a brushed on finish. Mohawk brand laquer would be good, a satin finish will shine a bit but won't be slippery.

Hope that helps.

there is a guy on ebay that sells something very similar

Remember, sand in the direction of the grain or you will see sanding marks. Apply your stain (whatever colour you choose) and let it penetrate a bit then wipe it off. The next day, do it again. Two coats of stain is always good. Then let it dry a day before you spray on a laquer finish. I recommend a laquer, not a urethane or varnish...LAQUER. It will give a hard finish that will look really smooth and shouldn't melt in the sun!

i just put one of those on, and i think it looks great! alot better than the origional.
