head gaskets, which side up?

See the pictures below, should I install with the silver ribbed sealing portion up facing the head or down facing the block? I will have to drill holes for the dowels in one side for them both to be facing down or up.

Put them on so they fit the dowel pins without any drilling.
 
So its ok if one side of the engine has it installed facing up and the other facing down?

They are not marked front or up
 
What gaskets are they? Have you looked on the manufacturers website for help?

Just a thought.

most are made to go a specific way and if you don't it could lead to gasket failure or engine damage, since it could mix antifreeze with the oil

you are suppose to be able the company name
when they on the block

if they are felpro in the middle of the gasket
they is the fel pro name and emblem in them
so you are suppose to be able to read it
when they laying on the block
