If you have the time or inclination now might be a good time to bypass the ammeter circuit and put a volts gauge in there instead. When I did mine I drilled a hole through the bulkhead connector where the old power wire went and just fed the new wire straight through; now my car running no longer depends on that crappy bulkhead and 45-year-old wiring, plus I don't have a fire under my dash just waiting to happen.
