If these pictures show up, you can see the rubber ring on the end of the tube and the metal ring on the shaft. someone suggested it is part of the deteriorated column (tube) end seal and it just slid down the shaft.

they make a repo-- seal for that-- around $40 if i recall, some people have tried making homemade seals as well. Lawrence
 
If Frank Mitchell sells it for 50 bucks, that means you can get it somewhere else for under 20. Shop around.
 
If anyone finds it under $40 let us know. I need one too.
 
I have heard from a few that it was a rubber boot that covers the shaft. It kinda makes sense. That exhaust manifold is kinda close and I can see that heat making that boot junk in a hurry. However after looking at grimreaper's link I think he is on to it. That seal broke in two and vwa-la! because the end of the tube is empty ,with no seal.
