HELP! finding correct U-joint

I just realized that i bought a 3" steering clamp i hope mine is not the 3 1/2 im dyin gto put this thing back together and drive it more.

how do you measure this? from top to coupling hole?
or
from top to bottom?

I am having trouble getting the coupling retaining clamp on around the steering coupler.

HOW DID YOU DO IT? ? ?

any one else - how did you install the coupling retaining clamp around the actual steering coupler
 
everything is back together and installed but i am having trouble getting the clamp on because i have a big block maybe?
no room to work with.....
 
I TRIED to have it together and installed as one piece but again working with limited space so i could not get the steering coupling body onto the steering box (fear of telescoping the steering shaft) so i installed the steering coupling body first then the steering shaft onto the body now trying to slip over the clamp but difficult
