help me to understand cams

Tracy is dead on about lobe separation. I will add this. If you're planning on a street car that will actually be driven a lot, IMO you will be happier with a wider lobe separation angle (LSA) than a narrow one. A wider LSA will produce a flatter torque curve with more bottom end torque and not fall off as quickly at high RPM compared to a narrow one, but at the expense of a LITTLE less peak torque and horse power. It's a fair trade off for a street car. Also too, wider LSAs give better response because of higher vacuum signals and have better street manners. This is why you see all the factory HP cams having 114 or even 115 LSAs. With exception of course to the factory race stuff such as the Max Wedges. I don't think it's necessary to go to as wide as 114 but 112 makes for a very nice compromise for a full time street car.
