Help Needed: How to Remove 1969 Hurst Handle from the Shifter Base Mech...

I can't for the life of me get the chrome shifter handle out of its base....its a stock 69 A-Body bench seat shifter and stock Hurst base mechanisim, I have a factory 71-74 B-body bench seat pistol grip shifter to install. The 69 has the rubber bushings inside with the metal clips were the shifter base goes, and service manual shows to use a feeler gauge to release the clips and then pull it out, sounds simple but I am having no luck. BTW, it is installed in my 66 Valiant so I am removing the handle while its in the car, Thanks :glasses7:

Thanks alot Steve, I have tried it that way, sounds like my shifter handle is stuck in there really good, I'll try the WD-40 and let it soak :glasses7:
