I have a paint code from my 74 duster which is Y51L. The parts and paint stores are having trouble finding the mix. Even the online paint people are not sure enough for me to order. Does any one have the old paint formulas for the 70s' or know someone who can sipher this code? Help appreciated. Thanks

dusty1,
You have too many numbers/letters. Y5 is called Yellow blaze. Does that sound correct. I work in an auto paint store, I just looked it up..

Thanks for replying, and yes, yellow blaze sounds correct. The ID plate under the hood shows a 'ky5' number, so I bet Y5 is a good # for color. I am going to order the color chip sheet and campare it. Thanks again.

Remember the paint chip will be 35 years old!!!! As is your car. It should get you in the ballpark...

Bob, I talked to a body shop friend of mine today and he said that the paint guys at the auto store here could mix the paint if I had the reciept for centari or something in an acrylic enamel. His stuff isnt that far back. Would you have access to the mix that would be in the paint for this car? He said the guys at the parts store could mix it if I did the work for them....getting them off their...well you know? They have tried before but it was the wrong color. I think they just shot in the dark. This car is emaculate, garaged, and only 26K miles. The paint shines very nice so I figure that the paint mix would be close enough original, with out any fade factor. Thanks, Larry

Larry,
Not sure why you want acrylic enamel??? Are you just looking for touch up or to spray???? I can't mix centari(dupont), I only have ppg. Try and find a ppg or dupont paint store. I'm sure they can mix it or at least use their camera, to get a close match for your car. Go to ppgrefinish.com to see if you can find a jobber near you..

Did you get the Y51L from the original window sticker or a factory invoice?

If so, they left out the first digits of each code on those.

For your car Y51L is FY5 for the paint code & V1L for the vinyl top code.

I did get the code from the original window sheet. The metal tag under the hood ( in all its numbers ) has a KY5 in it. Would this be a different color than the Y5 number?

No. Y5 on the WS is the same as KY5 on the tag. Look for V1L (for your vinyl top) on the fender tag right above the KY5 code.
