My 68 Cuda has a 318 .030 over, with a 4-speed, 3.23 gears and suregrip. At the track I'm averaging about 15.85 1/4 mile. 60 feet times are 2.35.
Any idea what gears I could put in to get my times down to high 14s?
I know this is a silly question, but I wanted some input from you all.

Is it bone stock, 2bbl, cam, etc. just .030 over? i doubt 3.23 to 3.55 will give you much of a e/t change. i dropped 7/10ths from 2.76 - 3.91. I'm looking to dip into 13s with my pretty basic 318 in a 3,600lb car at 5,500+ft. so high 14s shouldnt be too hard lol. Whats the build? And the budget?

Like Mike said with a stock 318 I dont think gears will knock a second of your ET, but gearing wont hurt. Id go with as much gear as you can stand on the street. 3.91 or 4.10 are great for street/strip small blocks. But if you do a lot of highway driving you may be better off sticking with the 3.23 or 355s

heres my old motors results -

66 cuda very mild 318 - 4 bbl and cam - auto stock converter and 2.76's
15.5
changed to 3.23's and 340 x heads - lost a little compression., gained airflow
15.00

TUNING - setting quicker advance in the dist. and such...
14.7

then I pulled the motor and put in a 360 -

but with more gear reducations and unlimited stall ( 4 speed) you should be able to get in the 14's with out alot of trouble -

is your advance coming in early? have you tried to tune that?

are you running a 4 speed or overdrive? - the gear ratios have alot to do with it.

your 60' times are a little low, are you running slicks? are you spinning?

how tall is your tire? with the 3.23 you need a short tire - under 26" and it will go pretty good!

good luck
Dave

If you dont hi-way drive the car I would go with a set of 4:30 gears and 26 inch tall tires...if that seems to be too deep of gears you can adjust with taller tires

My 70 ran a best of 15.3 when it had:

stock 318, with a 340 singleplane intake and a 600 CFM Holley (dual points dist.)

727 with a stock converter

2.76 open rear gears

This is a full weight car also (well, not now as it's missing it fenders), I would think you could get better with a 4 speed, maybe something else is up.

What is the engine? You want to be at about 4500 or so max in 4th at the finish line. using 90 mph, that's about a 3.91 or so. I wouldnt go any steeper if the engine isnt modified with better exh or intake/carb. Then work on the suspension and technique, because dropping the clutch and flooring it will spin the tires a little.
