I just started my freshly rebuild motor and it is smokeing like crazy - I did put a good bit of oil on the pistons and down the cylinder during assembly as I was told to do by the service manual. Is this normal? how long should it last before I get worried? can I expect it to clear up without driving anywhere or will it take driving under load to clear it out?
Thanks for any help, Bill

I put oil on a clean rag and ran the rag up and down the cylinder then rubbed the sides of the pistons maybe a little oil got on top of the pistons but not much.

define "fresh rebuild", what kind of machine work was done to the block and what parts did you replace.

Makes me wonder if your exhaust is burning the oil that got pushed out the exhaust valves :dontknow:

Pistons were measured well within tolerance - block was hot tanked cylinders professionally honed, all new bearings, rings, heads rebuilt new seals.

I will say I had a escort I did an oil leak down compression test on and when I started it it blew smoke for a while - I am just wondering if it will go away without driving under load or If I will have to run it under load to get rid of the smoke - and also is this normal at first start up when everything is oiled for assembly? Its been many years since I started a freshly rebuilt engine so I cant remember. I do know it is oil smoke I can tell that much.

Mine did, Do you have new exhaust ?
Did the old motor plow oil into the manifolds and pipe and muffler?

smoke is normal---- are these moly rings ? have you driven the car yet ?

go drive it around for 20 minutes--dont floor it or nothing---just drive around -- 20-55 mph for a while.

New Exhaust front to back - they are not moly rings.

Thanks 496dart that is the consensus I'm getting from asking around is that I need to run it to seat the rings and clear out the oil - and that it may take awhile -

Bill,
You'll need to run that motor on the road buddy. I always do full throttle acceleration without going above 3500 RPM. Doing this at low RPM will create high cylinder pressure and seat the piston rings.

Don't let the car idle in the driveway any longer than necessary especially if you're getting smoke already.

Good Luck buddy.

George

Thanks George- I will wait till I get all the little things tied up and can take it on the road before I start it again. I have not let it sit and Idle - So next time I start it I will run her down the road - Will it help to load it down by going up some big hills - I have alot of them around here!

msarli1 - Its a 273 commando - I have not broke it in yet - I just started it.

Hills are goo too Bill. If it's a stick car, just short shift it to keep the rev's down, and push the pedal down. No need to "get on it" just trying to built high cylinder pressure to force the rings outward into the cylinder walls.
I wouldn't be too worried about it Bill. It may not clear up totally right away, but as long as it isn't out of hand, you'll be OK.
