Yeah, the construction is a little silly, but I do like the use of the old transformer. I've got a few of those and sometimes, conventional resistance welders have a difficult time reaching certain types of resistance weld joints on cars.

This information would be very useful for making a really good quality remote unit that could be used in tight and long reach areas, without breaking the bank or needing an extremely heavy transformer suspended by a crane to get the unit where you want it.

Using high capacity, high amp wire seems like a nice way to get around mounting the transformer to solid arms and needing the transformer to go everywhere that the contacts go.

Yes!
Make non- conductive arms that are hand held, foot pedal operated "GO" switch and long cables. A go anywhere unit. That I would do...wear gloves of course :)
