hood hinge retainer replacement tips

I was able to remove my hinges without pulling the fenders or doors and sent them out to be rebuilt.

I got them back on the car but can't get the upper push retainers back on (tight quarters)

Anyone ever done this on a assembled car successfully?

It's a 69 Barracuda and everything is freshly painted.

try holding a socket over the clip and tap it with the side of a small ball peen hammer ;worked for me

Perhaps remove the splash shields behind the tires???
