What is the proper location of the cable for the hood pin? Is it through the grill or just under the hood? Thanks

I think under the hood - to the radiator support.

What Kory said, just under the hood.
The pins are not for decoration, they are a safety catch, in case your hood latch let's go, to stop the hood from flying wide open, driving down the road.
If that were to happen with the cables running through the grill, all I can say is good bye grill.
