There is a local truck for sale near me, 91 Dakota, 318, auto(500?) 4wd...395 000 kms. not a typo. :) There has been a lot of debate on the overdrive trannys fitting in an abody. Since this is 4wd, can I get something to make it like a 2wd or is a 4wd totally different. thanks

Id ask if it will work with the front drive shaft outtheres a lot of 4x4s out there missing the front shaft. But there are some that wont pull with out the front shaft.

I would say that you could possibly buy an overdrive unit (tailhousing) for 2wd which would have the same output male splines as a 2wd 727.

If you can bolt on the 2wd o.d. unit there is a couple of critical specs that have to be checked . For the overdrive piston thrust washer and intermediate shaft spacer, for proper endplay. You could burn up the overdrive unit if those specs are not right.

I would contact a parts place to be sure, I am putting a 518 together myself and dealt with these guys for hard parts
