i recently purchased a 1968 plymouth sport fury convertible factory 4 speed and was told that there were very few made. maybe 40 but i cant find any proof of this anywhere. just trying to find out where i can get proof of this any help would be much appreciated.

thanks

This is an A body site, might be better to ask on a C body site. I do see on allpar's Fury page where they say .2% of total 1968 Fury production had a 4-speed.

My brother has a Sport Fury convertible,with 4speed and 383! It stays in Oregon until it finds a buyer! Not sure if it's a 67 or 68!!

Got a friend in MI who had a Fury III with a factory 383 4 barrel and 4 speed. He said it was 1 of 10 Fury III convertibles made with a 4 speed. Don't know where he got his info. One thing for certain, a 4 speed in a C Body is pretty rare.

Sport Fury

PH23 = 6,642

PS23 = 17,073

PH27 = 2,489

4 speeds are not as common as autos but they are not hens teeth for 68 ......a significant number were 4 speed on the sport models up to 68......68 was the last year for slabs and last year the 4 speed was semi-common.....starting in 69 when they re-designed to Fuseys, then 4 speeds became hens teeth and the Auto became standard with no 4 speed option after mid-year 1970.

i had one of those hanging around for a while too

Yours looks like a '65 or '66. Looks nice too.:glasses7:

yeap ...your right 66 the only difference between 65 and 6 is the console was different......but my point was that they did make a lot of 4 speed slabs....it wasnt till the fusey came out that 4 speeds got really rare to non-existant.

65 & 66 Fury's had several differences Rani :glasses7:

My friend has a 65 Sport Fury 383 4-speed, he has a field full of cars and it just sits and rots, he wont sell it and he will never restore it......damn shame, really cool car too

I seen a 68 Fury convertible 440 4-speed at the Nats one year, very cool car, the only one I ever seen

Rani,
Just how many cars do you have?
I was brought home from the hospital when I was born in a 66 fury.
My dad bought it new, He kept until about 1984.
I also drove that car a good bit in high school, but it was getting pretty wore out by then.

i worded that wrong but i meant as far as the general layout of the interior.....other than the console it will look very similar to the pic above.

not many, but i have had access to countless ...its my cousin ...he owned a salvage yard before so old cars are plentiful in these parts

So if Ranidart and Allpars numbers are both correct then there were 26204 Furys in 1968 and Allpars says .2% 4 speed which would be 53 total. That's across the board. If the convertible 4 speed take rate was the same as the over all it would only be 5 4 speed convertibles.

PS I see now that Rani's numbers are only Sport models while Allpar probably is across the Fury line. The whole line of 68 Furys was 309517 which would be 619 4 speeds. Probably almost every one of those 4 speeds was on the Sport line so the 40 or so originally thought might be about right. What might be just as cool would be a 4 speed stripped down Wagon.

well thats what the math sure works out to ....i find that hard to believe but i dont have a by the transmission break down .......i find that real hard to believe that they are that rare but sometimes like they say "fact is stranger than fiction"

my source for general production numbers is:

Lee, John. 1995. Standard Catalog of Chrysler 1924-1990. Krause Publications. 1995 first edition.

and the numbers i took from book and posted here are for Sport Fury Only.

What nobody wanted then is often what nobody wants now. Some things like superbirds slip through the cracks or were not appreciated until their time had past, a true work of art so to say. Also a superbird is tough to even clone properly, a 4 speed clone is easy if that's all you want.
