How to find a smaller flywheel ? Engineers ?

I want to make a pit starter for my Maico 490 using a small (6-8”s) gear like a flywheel. How would I go about searching for one ? I don’t know the nominclature to specify the correct teeth .
 
Not understanding what you are hoping to accomplish..

Gear? So there's a gear to mesh with? Or a sprocket to engage the chain? any access to the end of the crankshaft?

I will use a Mopar starter to turn a roller that in turn spins the wheel on the bike. Once up to speed I let the clutch out and essentially “Pop Start” the bike .
They are fairly common in motorcycle racing but cost a small fortune. And I have most of the materials to fabricate one .

And a ***** to start ! I don’t think the factory kick starter assembly gives it enough piston speed . But It will bump start in a heartbeat .
490 is to modern.... My flashbacks are to the old 501.... Don't bother tightening anything, it'll just vibrate loose anyway... Safety wire is your friend...

Thinking about the starter... Might want to eliminate the bendix completely and use a sprocket & light (bicycle) chain to drive the roller...

But the 490 can do doubles without breaking my back on landing .. lol
I like the idea of a bendix so as not to overspin the starter once the bike starts .

Can u do something like on the junior dragsters? They’re kinda like a top fuel arrangement aren’t they? Or am I totally off base. Kim
 
You need to fix your tune. I’ve had multiple open class Bigga bore bikes and my brother still does.

He has an 80 440. He had a 2003 500 and I had a 2004 500.

They are start in two or three kicks cold..

If they don’t start cold they are lean. If they don’t start hot they are pig rich down low.

The compression release is a MUST to start one. It’s not an option. You’ll break kick shafts and gears not using it.

We went up to Elphendorff Pass or somewhere up on the peninsula in late December 2005. The snow was flying everywhere and the only place to ride was up there. Some guys from ThumperTalk put the ride together. There must have been 50 bikes show up. And only two 2 stokes. Some kid on a 80 and me on the 500.

It was in the single digits when we unloaded. It never got out of the teens the whole day. It was well diggers arse cold up there.

Of course, the lookie Lou’s were all “concerned” my 2 stroke would even start let alone make a full day.

I waited until about half the guys had their junk up and running. I pulled my bike off the stand, turned on the fuel and laid it on its side until fuel came out of the overflow hoses. Then I slowly (with the compression release pulled) kicked the engine over 3-4 times. Then I laid it on its side again until fuel ran out of the overflow hoses. Then 3-4 slow kicks and then I hit it twice and it was off and running. Two kicks on a single digit morning.

The best part of the day was some 20 something kid was riding a 450 Yamaha and he was a nice guy. We stopped by some pond and we started BS’ing. He said no one can believe you can ride that thing. I said it’s easier to ride than your 450 and you’d be faster on it too.

So we swapped bikes. I couldn’t keep the kid in sight. That slow revving pig four stroke was hard to turn. I hate engine braking and it has loads of it. It was miserable.

He finally killed it in a corner and he couldn’t start it. So we swapped back. I found out later he went out and bought a nice KX 500 and he ditched the 450.

You are correct in the technique. I lay it over until it floods , push the compression release, bring it to top dead center and give it a good kick 3-4 times.
This Maico is not a reed valve engine though . It is a case port and much harder to start than the reed valve engines . I have had an MX250 , ktm 495 , yz 490 , ATK 406 , ktm 300 and a CR250 . All were easy to start …. The Maico starts instantly if I bump start . I don’t think the Maico kick starter design allows enough piston speed for complete combustion. I have an upgraded ignition , custom head and higher compression and it seems to be jetted pretty close to. I have experimented with advancing ignition etc and have had it start within 5-6 kicks from time to time but usually it takes 10 minutes of kicking by which time I am half worn out . And I play hockey several times per week so my legs are plenty strong.
 

Surplus Center in Lincoln NE has all kinds of sprockets, pulleys that have weld in centers to make about anything, they have a website.

Any option for an aftermarket electric start kit?

This one is for a CR500 but something similar? Or maybe modifying one to fit?

That company is great!! I put one one my CR500AF.

Could the gearing be changed in the kickstart assembly to spin the motor over faster. Have a set of gears built.
It would require custom gears and more precise machining than I am capable of. Maico used a moon gear assembly vs the style we have in our modern bikes . Kinda hokey …

I forgot that you owned an AF .
