How to get rid of fleas???

:tool:
this "will" help w/ fleas in the house, also spiders, put a night light at the entry doors, unrestricted, put a pie tin or platter under it on the floor, full of water w/ 3-4 drops of dawn dish soap in it. the critters wil jump at the light at night and fall into the soapy water-dead bugs!! just make sure these are the only lights on in the house at night.---we haven`t had a problem w/ them so far this yr. but we keep the nite light platters on 24-7 yr round----bob

This works VERY well, we use it in the rentals.
Try to get the light as low to the pan as you can,
and you must use soap as a water surface tension breaker.
You will be amazed if you have a large infestation.

Guys, in the last 10 or so years there has been a revolution in flea treatment.

It's called "IGR" or insect growth regulator.

Basically, it's a compound that doesn't let the juvenile fleas mature beyond the larval state. That means they will never reproduce. It only works on the genetic makeup of certain insects, and is totally safe for humans and other mammals.

The catch (if you can call it that) is that it doesn't kill anything, so you still have a generation of fleas to deal with before the IGR starts taking effect.

There are several different varieties we use.

Ultracide- IGR combined with killer. Expensive, but treats areas where the cats hang out. We used it twice in the beginning of our treatment program, and haven't used it since.

Archer- concentrated IGR. We dilute this and spray it on the carpet and in the yard in a 20 foot radius of the house. We used to do it every six months, but now just once a year or whenever we see a flea or two.

Lufenuron- generic name for the ingredient in "Program". IGR that is internally ingested. We give this about once every 5 to 6 weeks (even though dosage says monthly)

Additionally there is "Capstar", an internal formula that kills the fleas as soon as the bite, and also induces them to bite! (This can be either disturbing, or amusing to watch, as the fleas will literally start biting and thrashing in death, which can drive the cat batty)

...and finally, if there is a flea problem, there is likely a tapeworm problem.

Praziquantil is what you want for this, and two treatments about two weeks apart is the best procedure, although we've had good luck with 1/2 the recommended dosage per treatment.

Three years ago we had a horrible flea issue.

We did as I've described above, and have only seen one or two stray fleas in the three years since.

We have six cats (and a chihuahua) that are free to come and go in and out of the house as they please.

We get our generic capstar (haven't needed in 2 years) and lufenuron from ebay for $20 per six doses, and praziquantil (also not needed in years)from Tractor Supply.

Archer and Ultracide also from ebay- shop around as prices vary quite a bit.

It's doable with some effort up front and just a bit of regular maintenance.

All the humans and animals involved will thank you.

...we also haven't bathed a cat since they were kittens, but we did use flea combs (along with the generic capstar) when we had the outbreak three years ago.

I even started working on a flea comb that had a built in hinged anvil, so you could just operate the handle to crush the flea, once you had it in the comb tines.

Never finished it cause the capstar worked so well.

Ok, I am on my computer now, Boogy (RIP) would walk over to my brothers house and pick up flea's and this is what I used, I could see them jumping off as I rubbed or spit's her down with it, Buddy also looks and smells great and this does work for me here in Arkansas where the humid days are everyday.

Just read this and you be the judge :coffee2:

On another note there is some great info in this thread y'all have posted in, thanks for sharing :glasses7:

besides diatomaceous earth, 20 MuleTeam Borax (sodium borate) is safe is NOT boric Acid works well. essentially dries them out. Dust the floors, under sofa whatever, leave on several hours/over night vaccum up. Dispose of vacuum bag outside immeditely. Repeat within a week. seriously, it works well.

Read the MSDS for it, as long as you don't eat it in large quantities, no worries. id MUCH rather have "soap" residue than a flea bomb with humans in the house.

Are you implying that Boric Acid is not safe?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boric_acid#Insecticidal

Used it off and on for years, and it works.

Hmmm............ I hadn't heard that. How do you keep the humidity down with the windows open?

Lol, I am in Oklahoma... the land of humidity so the AC is on. I have breathing issues so all the sprays and such affect my breathing so they don't happen. I had a bad case of fleas in the house last year thank to my daughter bring her dogs up here.

The salt water in a spray bottle and vacuuming a couple times a week wiped them out. Spray all soft goods (carpet and furniture) twice a day for a couple of days then use plain water to spray in the future until you are rid of the fleas. You just need to dampen it not drown it.

This isn't the first time that I have used the salt water for fleas. When my children were young they wore white socks and we had fleas in our house so they attacked my kids. That is when an old timer told me about the salt water method and not wanting to expose my children to pesticides I tried it. Worked as he said it would since it dried out the fleas so they died. Vacuuming with a vacuum that used a brush and then damping the soft goods would wipe out any new offspring.

....tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in their FULL bowl of drinking water does wonders too!

And they don't mind drinking it afterwards at least our 2 cats and one Dog doesn't anyway....

We do however get a "flea treatment for the dog at the vet's on his yearly checkup....seems to go a long ways for such a little dog....

Hey Karl, thanks for remembering Sox. << hug >>

And YY1, thank YOU for the amazing info on the alternative flea treatments.

That's what we use, lather em up and leave it on for about ten minutes.

We also use this, which works pretty well.

Diatomaceous Earth (food grade): bug killer you can eat!

I have heard two explanations of how diatomaceous earth works.

  • diatomateous%20earth-magnified.jpg
One is that on a microscopic level, the diatomaceous earth particles are very sharp looking. These particles stick to an insect and get stuck between its exoskeleton joints. As the insect moves, it gets physically cut up.

The other explanation is that diatomaceous earth sticks to the insect and somehow causes them to dry out. I think this approach involves scratching the insects waxy layer which then allows precious moisture within the insect to get out. So their teeny tiny bug-innards turn into teeny tiny bug-innards-jerky.

    It's completely non toxic.

I was talking with my brother yesterday about the fleas. He said that he once had some and used the diatomaceous earth. You just spread it over your carpet like grass seed/fertilizer and vacuum it up a day or two later. It got rid of the fleas in his house. He said that it works great.

My wife used the diatomaceous earth and we both swore never again!! I didn't kill all the fleas but it DID cover everything and I mean EVERYTHING with dust when we swept it up!! Heck, there's even dust INSIDE the cupboards!!

She ordered some frontline so we're gonna see what that does

We didn't use salt water, we just used table salt. Dust it all over your carpet and leave it over night then vacuum the next day due that once or twice, and bathe the animals with Dawn and go to the vet and get the flea treatment that they take once a month, pill not the kind you put on their fur and they will all be gone in no time. We picked up a stray Chihuahua, we were out for a cruise and she passed us on a road of corn fields and no houses and she infested the house and we had two cats a boxer and a lab for over 5 years with no fleas!!
Good Luck

Yea we currently have kitchen salt scattered over our living room and need to get more for the rest of the house

Wow, we haven't had that problem. Just did it again last week.
