I Purchased A Torque Converter For A Small Block 4500 Stall
There Are #s Stamped On It 175008 Also B5, 1570 I Dont Know If These #`s Mean Anything I Am Trying To Determine If The Converter Is Intern Or Extern Balanced Is There A Way To Tell ? Any Help Would Be Greatly Appreciated.

I would think that an externally balanced convertor would have a weight welded to it......

Agreed, there will be a weight, I just ran into this problem. My 340 that I just removed was internally balanced, but I needed a torque convertor for a stroker that was external balanced.

Summits sells kits with a weight and template. I would need to weld the weight on the neutral balance convertor.

Or you could buy the B&M flexplate that has the portion cut out of it.

Be careful welding on a torque convertor, too much heat could warp the vanes. Short tack welds should be all you need.

The guys above are right. If it's for an externally balanced engine it'll have a weight (approx. 1" by 1/2" by 1/4" thick) welded to the engine side (front) of it. If it's for an internally balanced engine it won't have any weight there. Don't confuse the weights around the perimeter with balance weights for the engine. The ones around the outside are to balance the converter itself and have no bearing on the engine balance.

Also note that there are different balance requirements for different externally balanced engines so make sure you get the right one. An example is a newer 340 that is externally balanced requires a different weight than a 360 which is also a small block and externally balanced. Usually it's better to get a standard torque converter that's neutral balanced and use a B&M or TCI flexplate that's for your particular engine.

"B&M & TCI has weighted flexplates".

I learned something new again today. I thought it had to be done on the convertor. That's why this site is so good. It has lots of knowledgeable people.

If It Is External I Will Definately Try The Flexplate Route-this Site Is Great Somebody Always Has An Answer .
