I had been having a problem before with my left side exhaust manifold not clearing the power steering box - it chatters a little sometimes at idle and always in reverse.

It was suggested here on this forum that I could perhaps shim it - how does one do it? I can't even find a part that looks like it would fit.

1973 Duster 318

The existing (new) motor mounts look like this.

If I'm going to do it, now is the time as the heads, intake, and timing cover are off; not going to get much better access and the motor is much lighter/easier to maneuver!

What shim? How to install it?
Suggestions?

Thanks!

your not going to shim a spool mount, there is no wiggle room. Im trying to understand why the motor is moving so much under load? Is your trans mount good? You could install a torque strap but thats just metal on metal when it cinches up. There is always the die grinder on the suspected point of contact.

You might be able to secure some stock under the mt(s) where the mts set in the saddles & raise em slightly. you dont have alot of wiggle room before the horizontle thru bolt head in the front and the nut in the rear will hit the folded over "roof" of the kmember saddles. you might also visual on slotting the mtr mt bolt holes where the mts bolt to the block ears to gain a slight bit. You might be able to grind on the st box and or the ex manifold depending on where. Good visual & go from there

I'll be dropping the transmission next month and will check the transmission mount/change if necessary.
If that doesn't fix it, it looks like I'm going to be doing some grinding.
Thanks for you input.

your MANIFOLD, isn't clearing...??? i would check mounts first. if an OEM exhaust part isn't clearing, i would find the reason, before i start grinding or shimming.

Shoot - sorry!
Forgot to mention that they are not OEM 318 manifolds but from a 340!
