Been driving my 71 Duster with a freshly rebuilt 904 for a year and a half, no issues, shifts great, runs good ext. Today suddenly while i was driving it started making a very loud high pitched howling/whining noise. Every time you touch the gas pedal and give it some throttle it starts to whine, as soon as you let off the gas it slows down and then stops whining almost right away. Other than the extremely obnoxious sound, still shifts and drives perfect with no loss of power ext..... Any idea what could be the cause?

Checked the kickdown, its adjust correctly, Fluid level is good, and fluid is clean and doesn't smell burnt.

Possibly a fin in the converter broke loose or is 1/2 attached like the brazing snapped. Or the bushing for the input shaft inside the converter went bad.

Do you know if it is a rebuilt converter?

I’ve had front pumps make noise but those change with rpm.

Sorry for your troubles.

Need some more info, does it make noise when in park or neutral not moving of if you have it in gear D or R foot hard on the brake and give it some throttle say 1500 RPM's or only when driving?

Only driving

Update: drained all the fluid. No debris or chunks of metal, fluid looks/smells correct. Stirred it up with a clean magnet, nothing stuck. Thinking maybe its in the Converter. Shifts flawless.

Deff not the belts, they squeal on first startup with the high idle/choke on but its a totally different pitch and tone. This is deffinitely the transmission or rearend but ive had two people ride with me and we all think its coming from the trans tunnel.

You say driving only, what speed, under 10, 10-25, 25 & up, When, possible pinion bearings.
T/C usually make noise in gear at idle, acceleration and you find aluminum flakes in pan

All speeds, the second you touch the gas pedal, and the second you let off it stops too. no matter how hard or soft you press it.

Did you run it without the dust shield . As the motor goes up in RPM's fluid pressure pushes the converter front under a load.

talked to the guy who built the trans for me. He said due to the fact my fluid is clean and has no metal shavings/chunks, and the transmission is functioning correctly that he thinks its most likely either the converter going bad or that it could be the Pinion yoke nut coming loose. Gonna check that first, and if that doesn't fix it ill try replacing the converter next.
