After the sticker shock I had from the first guy I had some more guys out to give me quotes. I had 5 in total that were interested. The prices varied depending on the type of paint, work to be done and quality.
I settled on one of the more expensive quotes after taking all of the factors into account. After tax price is $650 dollars more than I had planned, but I am also getting more than what I originally planned on.
The guy tells me he only does one quality of job. That is top notch. I have seen his work on 3 cars and was very impressed. He has had his paint jobs win best in show on more than one occasion.
This is what I am getting. He guarantee's the body to be straight and no orange peel. The painting will include a complete colour change so the typical areas will be painted. (jams, underside of hood, trunk, etc) He will use base/clear and wetsand and buff. There is the red of the car and the semi flat black that will cover part of the hood. The time frame to do the job is, he will take the car in 2 weeks and I should get it back a month later.

Sounds like you feel comfortable with this guy. Its a lot easier to let your "baby" go with someone you don't have doubts about. Best of luck.

Congradulations, I have always felt that finding a good painter/bodyman.. is like finding a wife, theres tons of them out there but which one is gunna give you the best deal for your moneys worth..

May I ask what the final price is?
Do you have alot of body work?

Thanks guy's. This guy came highly recommended from one of the guy's that works in my building. He's a chevy guy but I won't hold that against him. LOL

The total cost will be $3500. I had budgeted $2500 plus tax for a total of $2850. That's where the $650 more than I wanted to pay comes from.
There are about 15 little dents and dings. Plus there are the seams where I filled in my side marker lights and the seams where I welded in 2 quarter patches. He is also going to make my scoop sit flush on the hood. A word of advice, don't buy a scoop from VFN, they are not the best quality. He also talked about clearing the engine bay to brighten it up a little.
There is still a little welding to do at the junction of the trunk extensions and the lower quarters. I left this on purpose as I felt it would make the body guy's job a little easier to make sure things were straight. He thanked me for that.

$3500 isn't that bad of a price if he does as nice of work as you said he does.
I was quoted $2500 to paint my Duster when i'm ready,all they will have to do is block sand it if i don't do it seal it and lay the color on.

A friend of mine is having them redo his late wife's 77 Chevy stepside, i'm waiting to see what kind of job they do on it before i decide if i want them to do mine.
 
Boy I wouldn't do it for that amount of money. Depending on the color, basecoat can be as much as $800 a gallon for high quality paint (PPG, Glasurit, Diamont) and then another $400-$600 for clear depending on the paint line. Glasurit clears are really expensive. You can save some money by going with single stages but I don't touch metallics in anything but BC/CC. Then you've got primers, sealers, abrasives, body filler, tape, paper, plastic..... another $300 plus in the winter you've got heating expenses. I personally like to make more than $1,500 to $1,800 a month. Of course if he is using "economy" paints then the price of materials comes way down. Does this guy have all of his teeth???? Track marks???? What paint line is he using??? My personal favorite when money is of no concern is Glasurit.
 
One thing I have found is that the paint does not seem to cost as much up here for some reason. I don't know what brand he is using. He said he only paints with one brand though so I will find out. My car is not the only one he will be working on in this time frame, so I am sure he is making more than $1500 a month. When I went to his shop he was doing bodywork on 3 cars and had one in the paint booth which was big enough to hold one car and parts of that car. They could be hung from the ceiling and set on stands.

I agree, I just spent $700 for sandpaper, a gallon of glasurit 22 line in R4 Charger red, a gallon of reducer and a few other odds and ends. I'd look into it closely. Its a lot harder to fix someone else's mess than to have it done right the first time. Stripping a whole car after a bad paint job is a nightmare.

Thats about what i would have done the job for.Now if there was a lot of rust repair to take care of,that would have made the price go up,but most of us dont count the sandpaper,tape,etc.its part of running a business.But then again,im just running a side business here,and am not doing it all the time,for a living anymore.Id say if they do a good job were you can see your self in the finish work,with no waves,your getting a good deal,Jack
 
I've been quoted $25,000 to paint my Valiant. The guy told me his price with a straight face. I've also been quoted $12K without smirk, $9K, $8K, $7K and between $3,500 and $5,000. Many of these quotes were hinged on me taking the engine out, taking the bumpers, grille and trim off, etc. Maybe it's where I live and the shops I went to but I think you got a good price! My Bel I cost $6K about 6 years ago and that car arrived at the painter as a stripped shell on a dolly.

The guy wanting $25K better have some best of shows to his credit from a national show. Not a little city show in the park. Maybe he had a lot of work and didn't need yours. Maybe his head is as large as a barrel. Maybe he's good. Last fall i built me a 30'X16' booth and i do my own and rent my shop to my buddies. I aint' payin that kind of money. I've had people look my black duster over hard when i told em it was my first paint job. They don't believe me. So what. Do it yourself Jack. Any of you guys close to me come on over. If MeMike ever gets him a car i'd be glad to hose it for him.
 
I got some quotes for my Road Runner and quickly found out that I couldn't afford a quality paint job. After seeing the jobs from the cheaper painter I decided I could paint my own and get the same results. My first paint job came out ok for a driver. I learned alot from the experience. I planned on redoing it some day but I'm having to much fun driving it.

He did Vettes and I saw a late '60's GTO when I was in there. I don't think he's nationally known, just some guy I found in the local Special Interest ad section. I got the idea he didn't want to do my car so he figured he'd throw some ridiculous figure at me to see if I would bite. He was a jerk, no doubt. Barely acknowledged me when I came in the shop and mostly ignored me the short time I was there. I actually called ahead and drove over an hour and a half one way to get there. I was fuming when I left, I wanted to knock his teeth down his throat. All told, just a bad experience.

I'd paint my own car if I had the space to do it, no doubt.
 
Hi Jack. The price you got is very reasonable to me. Are you stripping the chrome and trim off or is he? I took everything off my car except paint and it cost me a little more than you. We used Dupont Chromabase which is very good paint and not too expensive. Good luck and hope to see you at the Nats. Bobby
